Granite State Freshmen Post Top-Five Finishes, Women’s Cross Country Third at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (September 10, 2016) – Freshmen Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) and Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.) took third and fourth place, respectively, on Saturday morning, to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University women's cross country team at the Smith College Cross Country Invitational. Ultimately, the duo of New Hampshire natives led the Ravens to a third place finish at the 10-team meet.

Cormier stopped the clock at 20:43.86 to take third place, just four-hundredths of a second in front of her teammate, Zylak, who posted a 20:43.90 to take fourth place. The pair was joined in the top 15 in the 97-runner field by sophomore Sarah Hart (Glastonbury, Conn.), who placed 11th, with a time of 21:23.52.

Behind Hart, it was a one-minute gap back to the next Raven, as freshman Shaylyn Harrington (Pelham, N.H.) finished in 34th place, with a time of 22:23.45. Junior Natalie Davies (Ware, Mass.) rounded out the scoring five for Franklin Pierce, and was also the final Raven to place in the top half of the field, as she clocked a 22:46.88 to place 46th.

On the team front, the Franklin Pierce top five added up to 96 points and a third-place finish. Coast Guard (43 points) ran away with the team title, while host Smith (89 points) narrowly beat out the Ravens for second. Behind Franklin Pierce, Springfield (114 points) in fourth and Clark (121 points) in fifth rounded out the top five.

The Ravens return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host the Bruce Kirsh Cross Country Cup at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H.
