Dylan Jones

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 22, 2020) – The bats were potent for the Franklin Pierce University baseball team on its second day of a five-game trip to Myrtle Beach. The Ravens plated 26 runs across a pair of games to sweep away Mercy in a non-conference doubleheader at The Ripken Experience, 15-6, and 11-9. Senior catcher Dylan Jones (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) homered in both games for Franklin Pierce, while senior second baseman James Boria (Massapequa, N.Y.) went deep in the second game, his second homer in four games to open the season.

With the wins, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-1 on the young season, while Mercy falls to 1-8. The Ravens will wrap up the Myrtle Beach trip on Sunday, when they take on Post at 9 a.m. at The Ripken Experience.

Game 1: Franklin Pierce 15, Mercy 6

The Ravens -- playing as the visiting team -- led the day's first game, 5-4, through four innings, and then used three in the fifth, two in the seventh and four more in the eighth to build a commanding, 14-4 lead. In the fifth, sophomore center fielder Joel Lara (Boston, Mass.) provided a two-run single. In the seventh, Lara had an RBI single and later scored a run as well, on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Randy Flores (Brooklyn, N.Y.). In the eighth, Flores knocked in another run with an RBI single, while Jones provided the coup de grace with a three-run bomb.

The 15 runs came in support of senior right-hander Connor Sahlin (Litchfield, N.H.), who took the ball for his first start in just shy of two full years, as he missed most of the last two seasons due to injury. Sahlin (1-0) logged seven innings, allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out five on the way to the win.

On the other side of the ledger, junior pitcher Erick Miranda (0-1) departed after just 4.2 innings of work for Mercy. He surrendered eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits, walked one and struck out four while taking the loss.

Game 2: Franklin Pierce 11, Mercy 9

The second game was only a seven-inning affair, but saw plenty of back-and-forth action. Franklin Pierce led 9-6, before Mercy -- playing as the visiting team -- used two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 9-9. In the fourth, Mercy picked up one run on a first-and-third double-steal play, while graduate student designated hitter Miguel Ortiz Sanchez cashed in another run with an RBI single. In the fifth, the Mavericks were credited with another steal of home.

Franklin Pierce plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead and take the 11-9 victory. Senior first baseman Jonel Ozuna (New York, N.Y.) led off with a single and scored when Boria followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot.

Junior right-hander Jack Wallace (Winthrop, Mass.) made his first collegiate start in the second game for Franklin Pierce, but lasted just 2.1 innings. He was charged with six runs (five earned) on five hits, struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Boria's homer made a winner (1-0) out of freshman right-hander Hunter Reynolds (Marlborough, Mass.), who threw a scoreless final 1.1 innings for the Ravens. He allowed one hit, walked two and hit a batter.

For Mercy, freshman Anthony Burgio took the ball for the second game, but also did not factor in the decision. He allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits, walked three and hit a batter.
