Bats Break Out in Middle Innings as Baseball Betters Saint Anselm, 7-1

RINDGE, N.H. (March 29, 2017) – A two-run double in the fifth broke the game open and was part of a 2-for-4, three-RBI day for senior left fielder Chris LaVorgna (North Haven, Conn.) on Wednesday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University baseball team knocked out 13 hits on the way to a 7-1 win over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast Division play. Junior third baseman John Friday (Southborough, Mass.) added 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice for the Ravens at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 10-7 (2-1 NE10, 1-0 NE Div.), while Saint Anselm falls to 6-11 (1-4 NE10, 0-1 NE Div.).

After the first three innings went scoreless, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior first baseman Dalton Davis (Birmingham, Ala.) led off and went the other way with a towering fly ball, which fell between the center and left fielders for a double. Davis would move to third on a single to left by junior right fielder Adam Chase (Bridgewater, Mass.), before junior catcher Stephen Octave (New Windsor, N.Y.) reached on an error by the pitcher, which loaded the bases.

With the bases full and still nobody out, freshman designated hitter Richard DiMartino (Yonkers, N.Y.) drove in Davis with a groundout to third, which also moved everybody else up a station. Chase then scored from third as senior second baseman Kyle Hood (Arlington, Mass.) lofted a second-pitch sacrifice fly to center field.

The Ravens added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-0. The inning started at the top of the order with senior shortstop Lucas Luopa (Keene, N.H.), who was hit by a pitch for the second time on the afternoon. Luopa went first-to-third as Friday followed with a single back through the middle. Friday wound up taking second on the play, as Saint Anselm threw to third in an attempt to retire Luopa. LaVorgna was next and drove the first pitch he saw into the left-field corner to cash in both runs with a double. LaVorgna then scored three pitches later, as Davis followed and pulled an RBI single through the right side of the infield.

Franklin Pierce tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh to push the lead as high as 7-0. In the sixth, Friday went the other way to pump a two-out double to right field, and then scored on an RBI single through the right side by LaVorgna, In the seventh, Chase reached on an infield single and came all the way around to score as Octave went the other way and clubbed a double into the power alley in right-center.

Saint Anselm picked up its only run of the day -- an unearned tally -- in the top of the eighth to create the 7-1 final. Sophomore catcher Colin Rios opened the inning with a double the other way into the gap in right-center field. After a lineout, junior shortstop Max Wadington went the other way and dumped a single into right-center field. Chase misplayed the ball in the gap, which allowed Rios to come around to score on the error.

Junior right-hander Mike Lundin (Kingston, Mass.) started on the mound and picked up the win (2-0) for the Ravens. Still working his way back from injury, and also fighting illness on Wednesday, he departed after just four innings and 49 pitches (33 strikes). He did not allow a run, surrendered just two hits, walked one and struck out four. Five other pitchers threw one inning each to finish off the Hawks.

Senior right-hander John Lavoie (0-2) took the ball and threw 88 pitches (50 strikes) over five innings on the rubber for Saint Anselm. He allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits, walked one, hit three batters and struck out one.

The Ravens are scheduled to return to the field on Saturday, April 1, when they will -- weather-permitting -- host Assumption in an NE10 Northeast Division doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Pappas Field.
