Postgame Quotes: Franklin Pierce 1, Shippensburg 0 (National Finals Opener)
From left-to-right: junior right-hander Trevor Graham, Head Coach Jayson King and freshman Justin Brock talk to the media at the postgame press conference after the Ravens opened the National Finals with a 1-0 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. |
Head Coach Jayson
King
Opening Remarks
"I thought [starting pitcher Trevor Graham] did a great job. He set
the tone for the game. We thought he was competing on the mound; he
got himself out of some jams. The hitters, to me, were a little
tense today and really didn't let their true ability take over, but
[second baseman Justin Brock] came up with that big hit in the
eighth... It's not how many hits, it's when you get them, and we've
been talking about that all year."
On the coaching staff's
confidence in Trevor Graham
"Trevor's been our MVP the whole season; he's been that guy that's
taken the ball every time we've needed him too. He's gone late into
games, just like he did today, pretty much the whole season. For us
as coaches, we love handing the ball off to him. He's our guy, he's
the one that gets us going in the right direction and we have tons
of confidence in him. I think the players do as well. They know
when he's on the mound, they're going to have the opportunity to
win a ballgame."

On getting out of bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the
fifth
"My approach was just to attack. That's been my approach all game:
go after batters. It was a tough spot, I needed to shut them down,
and it would pump everyone up and help everyone come out and maybe
start the offense a little bit. I went into it trying to get a big
strikeout and some ground balls, and I felt like I did my job for
it."
On facing the jam while locked
in a pitcher's duel
"If anything, it just makes me pitch harder. The kid [Shippensburg
starting pitcher Pat Kregeloh] was throwing a really great game,
and he was doing a really good job of getting guys out... When that
happens, I've got to do my job. So, I wanted to just attack the
zone and beat him in the duel. You know, just win."
On what pitches were working
best for him
"Fastball, changeup was working really well. I had a lot of kids
swinging over changeups. If they were hitting them, it was either a
weak groundball, or a flyball. Also, I came after them with
fastballs, and I got a couple [looking strikeouts] because -- I'm
thinking -- they were thinking it was a changeup."
On pitching against aluminum
bats instead of wood
"I mean, you can't really break any bats [laughs]. That's really
the only difference for me. I still try to saw kids off on the
inside and get weak contact, but it's pretty much the same
approach."
Freshman second baseman
Justin Brock
On Shippensburg starting pitcher Pat Kregeloh
"He was getting ahead in the count, a lot of first-pitch strikes,
and his slider was pretty active. He pitched a great game."
