Ravens right-hander allowed one earned run over 13 innings last week

RINDGE, N.H. (August 2, 2010) – Freshman right-hander Joe Flynn (Plymouth, Mass.) of the Franklin Pierce University baseball team has been named Cape Cod Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on July 31, as announced Sunday by the league. He allowed just one earned run over 13 innings last week.

Flynn, currently playing for the Wareham Gatemen, had been pitching out of the bullpen this summer, but made the most of two starts during the past week. On July 25, he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out five over six innings on his way to a no-decision against Harwich. Five days later, he allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings while striking out four to post a win over Falmouth.

On the season, Flynn has posted a 1-1 record with one save and a 2.13 earned-run average in 11 appearances (two starts) for the Gatemen. Over 25.1 innings on the hill, he has allowed nine runs (six earned) on 22 hits, walked 10 and struck out 19 while holding opponents to a .222 batting average.

A Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection at Franklin Pierce in the spring, Flynn made 12 appearances (11 starts) on the mound for the Ravens and finished 12th in the conference with 61 strikeouts. He tallied a 5-2 record with a 3.86 earned-run average over 58.1 innings, as he allowed 29 runs (25 earned) 63 hits.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is one of the nation's premier wood-bat, collegiate summer leagues and is sanctioned by both the NCAA and Major League Baseball.

This spring, the Ravens (43-17-1) captured their fourth NCAA Championship Regional title in the last five years and the fifth in program history last month on their way to participating in the NCAA Championship National Finals. Franklin Pierce won two games at the National Finals and finished the season as a national semifinalist for the third time in team history.
