Jose Macias Selected by Oakland Athletics in 2010 MLB Draft on Tuesday
Junior right-hander taken 545th overall
RINDGE, N.H. (June 8, 2010) – Junior right-hander Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y.) of the Franklin Pierce University baseball team has been selected in the 18th round (545th overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
The selection is the 17th in program history for Franklin Pierce and head coach Jayson King, all since 2001. The 17 picks rank third among New England institutions in that time frame as the Ravens trail only Boston College and Connecticut. Franklin Pierce has had at least one player taken in the draft every year since 2001.
“This is a very exciting moment for Jose and the entire Franklin Pierce baseball program,” King said. “He had a tremendous season on the mound for us and I think Oakland is getting a really good prospect to work with.”
One of the country’s strongest pitchers throughout the spring, Macias finished second in the nation with a 0.87 earned-run average. He also ranked fourth in the country in strikeouts (118), fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.05) and 10th in strikeouts per nine innings (11.46). Macias led a Franklin Pierce pitching staff which led the nation in both strikeouts per nine innings (9.5) and hits allowed per nine innings (7.3).
Macias was the dominant pitcher in the Northeast-10 Conference, on his way to picking up Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Year and All-Northeast-10 First Team accolades. He led the conference in earned-run average and strikeouts and tied for the conference lead in wins (9). In addition, Macias ranked second in the conference in opposing batting average (.161; 52-for-323) and innings pitched (92.2).
Macias earned several national honors for his work during the
season, as he collected All-America First Team honors from all
three organizations which bestow awards: the American Baseball
Coaches Association, Daktronics and the National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association. In addition, Macias was one of six
finalists for Ping!Baseball’s Tino Martinez DII Player of the
Year Award.
It was a busy awards season for the right-hander, who also received both East Region Pitcher of the Year accolades and All-East Region First Team selections from each of the three organizations listed above. Macias was also selected to participate in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association’s College All-Star Game at Fenway Park.
The Ravens (43-17-1) captured their fourth NCAA Championship Regional title in the last five years and the fifth in program history last month on their way to participating in the NCAA Championship National Finals. Franklin Pierce won two games at the National Finals and finished the season as a national semifinalist for the third time in team history.
