RINDGE, N.H. (March 24, 2009) – Junior left-hander Steve Golbranson (Abington, Mass./Massasoit CC) authored a six-hit shutout on Tuesday afternoon to lead Southern New Hampshire to a 2-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University baseball team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce’s Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field. Freshman catcher Mike Dowd (East Bridgewaater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) went 2-for-3 for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

Southern New Hampshire scored the only runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore shortstop Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) led off with a single to behind the bag at second, but ended up on second base when Franklin Pierce sophomore shortstop Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) threw the ball into the first-base dugout while attempting to throw out Rines. Senior designated hitter Skyler Byrd (Milford, N.H./Milford) followed with a walk and senior catcher Joseph Gargan (Hudson, N.H./Rivier) attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt. He pushed the bunt back to the pitcher on the third base side of the mound, but Franklin Pierce junior left-hander Brian Maloney (Brockton, Mass./Mass. Dartmouth) could not find the handle and everybody was safe. With the bases now loaded, senior right fielder Scott Strong (Naperville, Ill/Naperville North) dropped a single into right-center field over the drawn-in infield to drive home Rines and Byrd to give Southern New Hampshire a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish.
