Deacon clubs three-run home run

Cliff Hicks Cliff Hicks went 2-for-4 with a solo home run at Lynn on Monday afternoon.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 16, 2009) – Senior center fielder Daniel Flores (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) went 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored two others on Monday afternoon to lead No. 20 nationally ranked Lynn to a 9-5 victory over the Franklin Pierce University baseball team in non-conference play at McCusker Sportsplex. Junior Matt Deacon (St. Albert, Alberta/Southern Idaho) knocked a three-run, pinch-hit home run for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

Lynn opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior third baseman Douglas Toro (Longueuil, Quebec/Crowder College) led off with a double down the right-field line and later stole third base. After Flores worked a walk, senior left fielder Gabe MacDougall (Oak Run, Calif./Cosumnes River CC) drove home both runners with a double to the gap in right-center.

Franklin Pierce cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the second. Junior right fielder Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led off the inning with a walk and scored from first three batters later when senior designated hitter Jacob Ferreira (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang) knocked a double to left field.

Lynn pushed the lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, junior catcher Kyle Holloway (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Highlands Christian) singled up the middle. Senior right fielder Jason Ten Eyck (Miramar, Fla./Piper) followed with a two-run home run to left field, his second of the season.

The Fighting Knights would add another run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1. Flores singled to left field, stole second and came in to score when the Franklin Pierce pitcher threw the ball away while attempting to throw out the baserunner.

Franklin Pierce would once again cut the lead to three runs with a run in the top of the sixth when fifth-year center fielder Cliff Hicks (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) led off the inning with a home run to left field, his first of the season.

Lynn put the game out of reach with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to push the lead to 7-2. Holloway led off and was hit by a pitch. Ten Eyck followed and laid down a bunt, but everybody was safe on an error by the pitcher. Two batters later, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and a walk to junior second baseman Einar Atencio (Panama City, Panama/Chipola College). Flores followed with a two-run single through the left side to give the Fighting Knights a five-run lead.

Lynn would add solo runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to push their lead to 9-2. In the seventh, junior first baseman Chris Chavez (Miami, Fla./Broward College) knocked a solo home run, his eighth of the season, to right field. In the eighth, Chavez did the damage again, with an RBI double down the left-field line which drove in MacDougall, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Franklin Pierce created the 9-5 final with three runs in the top of the ninth. Senior Steve Carr (Nahant, Mass./Lake City CC) led off and was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, senior Shane Murphy (Tolland, Conn./The Gunnery School) singled up the middle and Carr moved to second. Deacon followed with his first home run as a Raven, a three-run, pinch-hit home run to left field.

Senior right-hander Kevin Rickert (Toms River, N.J./Brookdale CC) started on the mound and got the win (3-0) for Lynn. Over seven innings, he gave up two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three.

Senior left-hander James Palmer (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) started on the hill and took the loss (0-1) for Franklin Pierce. In five innings on the rubber, he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits, walked one, hit a batter and recorded a career-high seven strikeouts.

The Ravens (6-6, 0-0 Norteast-10) return to the field on Tuesday, March 17, for a non-conference contest at Nova Southeastern. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at NSU Baseball Complex in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Franklin Pierce’s first home game is scheduled for Thursday, March 26 against Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m. Lynn (21-6, 3-3 Sunshine State) returns to action on March 17 at home against Molloy.
