#8/13 Franklin Pierce Cruises Past Assumption, 7-1

Bernosky leads the 12-hit attack with a 3-for-5, 2-RBI showing at the plate

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 27, 2008)
– The Franklin Pierce University baseball team, ranked eighth in this week’s pingbaseball.com and NCBWA Div. II polls and 13th in the latest Collegiate Baseball magazine rankings, scored in each of the first four innings as the Ravens cruised to a 7-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at H.L Rocheleau Field.

Four Ravens had two or more hits on the afternoon as the Ravens pounded out 12 hits. Junior Randy Bernosky (Port Huron, Mich./Waubonsee CC) led the team with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate while driving in two runs. Junior preseason All-American Scott Savastano (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and freshman Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, with Ingui adding an RBI as well. Junior Steve Carr (Nahant, Mass./Lake City CC) added a solo home run and sophomore Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) drove in a pair of runs for Franklin Pierce.

Junior Mike Baillargeon (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) went 2-for-4 with a walk for Assumption, while sophomore Derek Migrants (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) had two hits in four at-bats and drove in the team’s only run of the day in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Kyle Vasquez (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) had one of his best outings of the season on the mound for Franklin Pierce, going a season-high eight innings and giving up only one run on nine hits. Vasquez (6-1) struck out five and walked three in his outing before junior Corey Muscara (Manchester, N.H./Siena College) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Franklin Pierce jumped on Assumption starter Dustin Wirzburger (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) for three runs in the first inning. Senior Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, Mass./Becker College) led off the game with a triple and immediately came home on a single by Ingui, and after Savastano singled him to third Ingui came home on a wild pitch to make the lead 2-0. Bernosky then plated Savastano for the third run with a one-out double to left field.

The Ravens picked up two more runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Rivers. Franklin Pierce completed the scoring with Carr’s solo shot in the third inning and an RBI single by Bernosky in the fourth, giving Vasquez more than enough run support.

Franklin Pierce (32-12-1, 17-10-1 NE-10) continues conference play this afternoon, as the Ravens travel to Lowell, Mass., to complete a suspended game with Pace University. Assumption (17-27, 9-20 NE-10) completes its 2008 season tomorrow at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell at 3:30 p.m.
