Plymouth, Mass., native first Franklin Pierce product to collect NECBL weekly honors

RINDGE, N.H. (July 18, 2007) - Franklin Pierce University sophomore Scott Savastano (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) has been named Co-Player of the Week in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) for the week ending July 15.

Savastano, who was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 28th round of June's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, led the NECBL's Pittsfield Dukes to three wins last week as he hit .632 (12-for-19) with seven runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles and a .737 slugging percentage to go with two stolen bases (on two attempts).

In Pittsfield's 4-3 win at Concord (N.H.) on July 11, Savastano hit 3-for-5 with a double, run scored and two RBI. He hit 4-4 with an RBI and three runs scored against Holyoke on the 14th and finished the week with a 3-5 effort at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

In 16 games this summer since joining the Dukes, named after team president Dan Duquette - the former general manager of the Boston Red Sox, Savastano is hitting a team-best .379 (22-of-58) with nine runs scored, four doubles, a triple, 13 RBI and three stolen bases.

Savastano, the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, was limited to just 19 games for Franklin Pierce this spring after suffering a hand injury in the Ravens season-opening victory at No. 17 West Chester University. He returned in late April and finished the season with a .357 average (25-for-70), 11 runs scored, three doubles, two stolen bases, a triple, home run and 14 RBI. Savastano earned All-Tournament team honors at the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional.

Franklin Pierce (49-11, 26-4 NE-10), which posted a Northeast Region record for wins, recently completed its second-straight run (and third in five years) to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships in Montgomery, Ala., after capturing both the Northeast-10 regular season and tournament crowns for the first time in program history. The Ravens were ranked 10th in the final Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll.
