2005 NCAA DIVISION II NORTHEAST REGIONAL Top-Seeded Franklin Pierce Tops #3 Adelphi, 12-4, to Stay Alive

Hayes, Shea lead Ravens into game five today against game four loser

RINDGE, N.H. (May 20, 2005) - Top-seeded Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 27 in Collegiate Baseball magazine's Division II poll, stayed alive with a 12-4 victory in game three of the 2005 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce (31-13) will face the loser of today's second game between second-seeded and No. 29-ranked Southern Connecticut State (29-12) and fourth-seeded UMass Lowell (28-18) later today at 4 p.m. Adelphi sees its season come to a close at 25-19.

The numbers two through four batters for Franklin Pierce did the bulk of the damage in the contest and the three hitters were a combined 9-for-13 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBI and ten runs scored.

Junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) led the Ravens 14-hit barrage, as he was 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, a stolen base, three RBI and three runs scored. Classmate Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) was 4-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 2-4 with a double, homer, three runs scored and three RBI. Chambers double in the third was his Northeast-10 Conference leading 18th of the season, surpassing the program's single-season mark of 17 set by former Ravens All-American Eric Cavers in 2003.

Junior right-hander Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) improved to 6-1 on the mound as he went eight strong innings, yielding four runs, just one earned, on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He was also 1-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Junior Tom Cali (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) was the lone Adelphi batter with multiple hits, batting 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Junior Brian Horrmann (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) finished 1-3 with a double and RBI.

Sophomore Michael Myers (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) took the loss for the Panthers as he was hit for five earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks over two innings of work.

Franklin Pierce jumped ahead early, scoring in the first inning for the 24th time this season (19-5 record), as Duplissie collected a two-run single through the left side with two out. The Ravens added three in the third to take a 5-1 advantage with Shea doubling down the leftfield line and scoring on a Chambers double to left. Two Adelphi wild pitches resulted in two more runs.

Adelphi closed within 5-3 with a pair on the home half of the third with a pair of unearned runs. Horrmann delivered an RBI double and junior Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) scored on an error. However, the Ravens broke the game open with three in the fourth and four more in the sixth through eighth. Chambers delivered a two-run homer in the fourth and Hayes added solo homers in the sixth and eighth.
