Dymek leads way in 24:33

Melissa Dymek Melissa Dymek led the Ravens with a time of 24:33 at the 14th annual James Earley Invitational on Saturday.

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 10, 2009) – Sophomore Melissa Dymek (Hubbardston, Mass.) finished 163rd overall in a time of 24:33 on Saturday to lead the Franklin Pierce University cross country team to a 23rd-place finish at the 14th annual James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State. Westfield State senior Kerry Arouca won the event individually with a time of 18:57, while Southern Maine took home the team title.

Behind Dymek for Franklin Pierce, senior Alexandra Edwards (Smithfield, R.I.) finished 181st overall with a time of 25:23. Further back, sophomores Elizabeth Iannuccillo (Amesbury, Mass.) and LaPorsha Griffin (Bronx, N.Y.) finished within three seconds of each other with times of 28:58 and 29:01, respectively, to finish 238th and 240th. Sophomore Ciara Chicas (Westerly, R.I.) rounded out the participation in the event for the Ravens, as she placed 263rd with a time of 43:16.

Southern Maine (58 points) ran away with the team title, as finished 30 points ahead of the runner-up, host Westfield State (88). From there, the rest of the field was left in the dust, as Trinity (Conn.) (116), Roger Williams (143) and Bridgewater State (149) rounded out the top-five in third through fifth, respectively.

Individually, Arouca left the field behind, as she enjoyed a 26-second advantage over Southern Maine junior Carly Dion, who finished second with a time of 19:23. Roger Williams senior Emily Tran (19:24) finished immediately behind Dion in third, while Pace freshman Brianna Cano (19:30) finished six seconds further back, in fourth. Westfield State senior Ally Brown rounded out the top-five with a time of 19:57.

The Ravens return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Western New England College Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
