Cross Country Opens Season With Seventh-Place Finish At Shacklette Invitational

Edwards leads way in 25:28

Melissa Dymek Melissa Dymek posted a time of 25:36 at the Shacklette Invitational on Saturday.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 12, 2009) – Senior Alexandra Edwards (Smithfield, R.I.) finished 53rd overall in a time of 25:28 on Saturday to lead the Franklin Pierce University cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the 28th annual Shacklette Invitational, hosted by Saint Anselm. Saint Rose senior Melissa Bredice won the event individually with a time of 20:02 to lead Saint Rose to the team title as well.

Immediately behind Edwards for Franklin Pierce, sophomore Melissa Dymek (Hubbardston, Mass.) finished 54th with a time of 25:36. Sophomore Elizabeth Iannuccillo (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore LaPorsha Griffin (Bronx, N.Y.) finished 59th and 60th with times of 28:26 and 29:03, respectively. Senior Natasha Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) finished 62nd with a time of 30:09, while sophomore Ciara Chicas (Westerly, R.I.) posted a time of 33:57 to round out the Ravens lineup.

After Saint Rose (53 points), Bentley (54) finished second by just one point in a tightly-contested team battle. Merrimack (63) was nine points further back in third, while fourth-place Saint Anselm (76) placed just 23 points off the pace. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire finished fifth and Assumption took sixth.

Individually after Bredice, Bentley juniors Lauren Lesniak and Rachel Graham took second and third with nearly identical times of 20:09 and 20:10, respectively. Merrimack senior Katie Meagher (20:16) and Saint Anselm senior Jessica Marzik (20:21) rounded out the top-five.

The Ravens return to action on Friday, Sept. 25 at the Rivier Invitational at 4 p.m.
