Volleyball rolls to perfect weekend, sweeps doubleheader in final day at Wildcat Invitational

WILMINGTON, Del. (September 12, 2015) – Freshman Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) flexed some muscles on Saturday afternoon, as she recorded 20 kills in the first match of the day, aiding the Franklin Pierce University Volleyball team to two more wins on the day, collecting a weekend sweep and 4-0 record at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Wilmington University.

With the wins, the Ravens improve to 5-3 on the season and climb above .500 for the first time since a win in their first match of the season.

Leidhold provided pop along with junior Aiden Garcia (Eagle Pass, Texas) who followed up a strong Friday with yet another 19 kills in the first match. Paired with her second match, Garcia's performance over the weekend earned her tournament MVP.

It was a performance that Rob Bass would approve of, as Caldwell pushed Franklin Pierce to the edge in the first two sets, each going slightly into extra play. After two sets the score stood 1-1, as each team took a 26-24 win going into set three. Franklin Pierce would then take control and dominate set three with a commanding 25-15 win, led by Leidhold who put home six kills and recorded 13 digs.

Caldwell stepped up with their backs against the wall in set four, taking a 25-22 set win to push the match to a fifth set. The Ravens would ride the back of Garcia and sophomore Madison Klusendorf (Santa Maria, Calif.) who combined for nine kills out of 15 points for the match win.

Klusendorf backed up Leidhold and Garcia in the kill column with 12 kills, while freshman Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.) wasn't shy of the double-digit column, recording 10 kills as well. Sophomore Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) came only a few assists short of a single-game record for the crimson and grey, collecting 55 kills along the way.

Defensively, the Ravens were led by Leidhold with 28 digs, with senior Sarah MacHugh (Red Hook, N.Y.) not far behind with 27 digs of her own. Senior Catherine Purdy (Ossining, N.Y.) also joined the 20-kill club, grabbing 21 digs on the match.

Match two brought Holy Family, and Franklin Pierce didn't waste any time collecting the win, winning the three sets 25-18, 25-12, and 25-15.

Garcia led the way in match two with nine kills, followed by Sonuga in the department with eight. Leidhold and Klusendorf followed suit with seven kills apiece, with Runge collecting 31 assists. MacHugh and Leidhold led the way once again with 14 kills, as that would give Leidhold her fifth double-double in eight total matches this season. Freshman Brittney Carias (Burlingame, Calif.) joined the duo in digs with 12, the only other Raven in double-digits in that category.

The Ravens take to the court next on Friday, September 18 when they travel to New York Tech. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
