Women's Tennis Salvages Two Points in 7-2 Loss at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. (3/6/23) – The Franklin Pierce women's tennis team managed to secure a point in both doubles and singles competition, but found themselves downed for the second time this spring at the hands of Brandeis University by a 7-2 score on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, women's tennis drops 0-2 on the spring and 10-7 overall this year. Brandeis moves up to 3-2 on the spring, having now won four straight matches, and 5-2 overall.

The Ravens could not take two out of three in doubles competition, but were able to snag a victory on the No. 2 court. By way of tiebreak, Raven juniors Maria Penalver (Las Palmas, Spain) and Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) seized the extra set to win by a score of 8-7 (7-2 in final), besting Brandeis' Phoebe Tamaoki & Nancy Zhang.

Brandeis, following the overall victory in doubles, would carry over the momentum in singles competition, winning at all positions aside from No. 6. On the final court, junior Aynara Ferraz (Canary Islands, Spain) dropped a 6-3 decision in the first set, but then bounced back in the second with a 7-5 win to force a tiebreak third set. From there, Ferraz would claim the lone singles victory with a 10-6 decision, defeating Ella Chase. Brandeis would gain a 5-1 advantage through singles play, rounding out their 7-2 win.

It will be a long pause before women's tennis takes to the courts for their next matchup, when they will faceoff with regional opponent Queens (N.Y.) at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14th.
