Women's Tennis Captures 4-0 Victory over New Haven in NE10 Quarterfinals

RINDGE, N.H. (October 20, 2021) – The No. 3-seeded Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team made its third all-time appearance in the Northeast Conference Championship, taking down the No. 6-seeded University of New Haven, 4-0, in the Quarterfinals Round on Wednesday afternoon at the Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 9-2 on the year and advance to the Semifinals, while the Chargers see their season come to an end with the loss, falling to 6-7 overall.

The Crimson and Grey came out strong in the doubles matches, earning the point to take an early 1-0 advantage. Graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and junior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) took care of business on court No. 2, defeating Ivana Andric and Gaayatri Shankar of New Haven 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, the Chargers' duo Alexa Orlando and Nicole Mika tied it up, though, 1-1, after winning 6-3 over junior Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario). The pair of graduate student Estela Carra and sophomore Maria Penalver Aguilo clinched the doubles point for the Ravens, winning 6-3 over Karim Carreras and Lilia Rodriguez of New Haven at No. 2.

Carra was the first to win her singles match, swiftly taking down New Haven's Mika 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 4, followed by Mor, who downed Carreras of the Chargers 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Franklin Pierce needed just one more win to advance to the next round of the tournament, as four courts remained. At No. 3, Loria earned the match point for the Ravens with her 6-3, 6-3 triumph over New Haven's Shankar.

Three matches went unfinished. Penalver Aguilo, who took the first set of her match, 6-2, while Andric of New Haven was leading in the second set 5-2, before the match came to an end. Asterio Correa was up 3-1 over New Haven's Kacie Banks until the match was ended, and Pagliuca and her Chargers opponent Orlando were not able to get their match started

Franklin Pierce will travel to Hooksett, N.H., to match up against the No. 2-seeded Southern New Hampshire at the Penman Stadium Tennis Courts on Friday, October 22. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
