Women's Tennis Takes Down Adelphi on the Road, 5-2

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 12, 2021) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis squad defeated Northeast-10 foe Adelphi University, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon. The Ravens move to 8-2 (8-2 NE10), while the Panthers move to 6-3 (5-3 NE10) on the year.

The Crimson and Grey got out to a strong start, securing wins on courts No. 2 and No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, graduate student Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) and sophomore Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) defeated Adelphi's Amanda Franstedt and Louisa Junghanns, 6-3, while graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and junior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles over Barbie Quagliardi and Caterina Federici of Adelphi.

The Ravens duo of sophomore Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.) fell at No. 3 doubles to the Panthers' pair Julia Kielan and Carolina Chaves, 3-6, but, ultimately, the doubles point went to Franklin Pierce.  

Franklin Pierce extended its lead to 3-0 after picking up singles wins at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively. Carra notched the first point on court No. 4 after defeating Franstedt of Adelphi 6-2, 6-4, while Loria grabbed a point at No. 3 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Adelphi's Federici. The Panthers' Junghanns got the first point for Adelphi, winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 over Penalver Aguilo at No. 1 singles to make it a 3-1 match. Mor defeated Quagliardi of Adelphi 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 to earn another point for the Ravens to make it 4-1, before Adelphi cut the deficit in half as Panthers' Chaves defeated Pagliuca 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 6. Asterio Correa downed Kielan of Adelphi 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 to clinch the match for Franklin Pierce.

FPU will cap off the fall season at the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga., on Thursday, October 14. The time of the tournament will be announced at a later date.
