Women's Tennis Falters at Le Moyne in 5-2 Loss

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 10, 2021) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Le Moyne at Nottingham High School in a rematch from earlier this season on Sunday evening. The loss dropped the Ravens to 7-2 on the season, while the Dolphins improved their record to 11-1.  

The Dolphins' Isabella Barona and Brooke Fernandez took the first doubles match against Franklin Pierce's duo of sophomores Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario), 6-1 at No. 3. The Le Moyne pair Birdem Oz and Francesca Lilliegren clinched the doubles point after defeating graduate students Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and Anais Geslin (Livry-Gargin, France), 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.

Junior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) and graduate student Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) matched up against Le Moyne's Marta Nunez and Fiona Pepper, but the match went unfinished with a score of 5-3.

Le Moyne notched the first four singles points at No. 2, No. 6, No. 5 and No. 1. The Dolphins' Oz defeated Loria 6-1, 6-2, before Fernandez of Le Moyne won 6-1, 6-0 over junior Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.). Le Moyne's Lilliegren defeated Asterio Correa 6-3, 6-2, and Barona clinched the match for Le Moyne after downing Penalver Aguilo 6-4, 6-1.

Carra and Mor played out the remainder of their singles matches to grab the two points for Franklin Pierce. Carra defeated the Dolphins' Pepper 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, while Mor won 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 over Nunez of Le Moyne at No. 3.

The Crimson and Grey hit the road to take on Adelphi on Tuesday, October 12, for a 1 p.m. match up.
