Women's Tennis Sneaks Away from New Haven with 4-3 Win

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (September 26, 2021) – Graduate student Anais Geslin (Livry-Gargin, France) clinched the final singles point to help the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over University of New Haven at the UNH Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.

The Ravens improve to 3-1 on the year with the win, while New Haven falls to 2-2.

Franklin Pierce collected the doubles point after wins on No. 2 and No. 3. On No. 2, junior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) and graduate student Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) defeated Charger's duo Karim Carreras and Lilia Rodriguez 6-2, but New Haven's Gayyatri Shankar and Ivana Andric were able to get the 6-4 win over graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and Geslin at No. 1. Th duo of sophomores Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) and Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) defeated Nicole Mika and Alexa Orlando of New Haven 7-6 (8-6) for the doubles point on No. 3.

In singles competition, the Crimson and Grey and Chargers battled back-and-forth for each point. Andric of New Haven grabbed the first singles point of the match after defeating Penalver Aguilo 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 1. Loria pulled the Ravens ahead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mika of New Haven on No. 3, before Carra defeated her opponent Shankar of New Haven 6-2, 6-2 on No. 4, to extend Franklin Pierce's lead. New Haven's Kacie Banks closed the gap with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Asterio Correa on No. 5, while Katherine MacPhail of New Haven defeated junior Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 on No. 6 to knot the match up at 3-3.

On No. 2 singles, Geslin earned a 6-2, 6-8, 6-4 victory over her New Haven opponent Carreras to secure the 4-3 win for Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce welcomes Assumption on Thursday, September 30, for a 1 p.m., match at the Tennis Courts.
