Franklin Pierce women's tennis

RINDGE, N.H. (April 14, 2021) -- Following a bye weekend, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was back in action for the first time in a week on Wednesday afternoon. The Ravens were at home, and dealt visiting Southern New Hampshire a 4-1 loss in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-0 (7-0 NE10), while SNHU falls to 6-3 (6-3 NE10). The Penmen are the only team to score any points off the Ravens so far this season.

SNHU opened the match in a 1-0 hole, as the Penmen were shorthanded and had to forfeit at sixth singles. SNHU also forfeited third doubles, which meant Franklin Pierce had to take only one of the two remaining doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Freshman Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and sophomore Laura Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) did just that at second doubles, as they picked up a 6-4 win over junior Elizabeth Dwyer and sophomore Isabella Andrade. First doubles was left unfinished, with the doubles point already decided.

SNHU cut the deficit in half, to 2-1, as Andrade picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Alvarez Tello. The Ravens then answered and moved to close things out, with wins at second and third singles. Third singles went final first, as sophomore Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) slipped past sophomore Mina Houge, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) wrapped things up at second singles, where she chalked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over junior Alexxa Etienne.

First and fifth singles were both left unfinished after Franklin Pierce clinched the team match.

The Ravens are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday, April 18, when they host Assumption at 1 p.m.
