MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 24, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team bounced back from several first-set losses on Wednesday afternoon to take a 5-2 win in Northeast-10 Conference play on the road at Southern New Hampshire. Though the Ravens saw their shutout streak broken at three matches, they have now won four straight to open the season.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-0 (4-0 NE10), while SNHU falls to 3-1 (3-1 NE10).

With only two doubles matches and five singles matches on the docket on Wednesday, each match was worth a point. Franklin Pierce opened with a 2-0 lead after cruising to a pair of doubles victories. At first doubles, it was a 6-3 win for graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and sophomore Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) over sophomore Magdalena Hubickova and junior Alexxa Etienne. At second doubles, freshman Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and sophomore Laura Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) rolled to a 6-2 victory over junior Elizabeth Dwyer and sophomore Mina Houge.

The Ravens quickly made it 3-0 with a straight-set win at third singles, as Loria dispatched sophomore Isabella Andrade, 6-1, 6-2. Franklin Pierce faced a little trouble nailing down the decisive fourth point of the match, however. Penalver Aguilo, Mor, Alvarez Tello and freshman Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) all dropped their first set in singles play, but then each battled back to force a third set. It was Alvarez Tello who gave the Ravens an insurmountable, 4-0 lead, as she rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Houge at fourth singles.

At first singles, Penalver Aguilo dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 decision to Hubickova, while Mor suffered a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 defeat against Etienne at second singles. Asterio Correa created the 5-2 final with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Dwyer at fifth singles.

The Ravens are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 28 at Saint Anselm at noon.
