Women’s Tennis Grinds Out 5-4 Win Over Emerson

RINDGE, N.H. (October 14, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team picked up a narrow victory, 5-4, in non-conference play at home against Emerson on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-13, while Emerson falls to 1-3.

Franklin Pierce took two of the day's three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 lead. At first doubles, sophomore Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) went past Emerson sophomores Alisha Parikh and Alex Weingarten, 8-4. Meanwhile, it was an 8-5 win at second doubles, for sophomores Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.) and Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine), over Jolin Cheng and freshman Meredith Stisser.

Emerson picked up a doubles point courtesy of junior Tiziana Vazquez and freshman Cassia Burns, who notched an 8-5 win at third doubles against junior Alexia Dasilva (Naugatuck, Conn.) and sophomore Kelly Wilson (Hyde Park, N.Y.).

The Ravens and Lions then split the six singles matches, which allowed Franklin Pierce to come away with the 5-4 victory. The Ravens got straight-set wins at first and third singles, from Wyatt and Rich, respectively. Wyatt defeated Parikh, 6-3, 6-4, while Rich took care of Stisser, 6-2, 6-3. Wilson added an 8-4 win at sixth singles, over Vazquez.

The most competitive match of the day came at second singles, as Rodrigues and Weingarten required a tiebreaker set to settle things. Weingarten pulled out the win for Emerson, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5.

The Ravens currently have no further matches on their fall schedule, but the team may still play a makeup match against Bentley to round out its NE10 slate. The Ravens and Falcons were postponed by weather on Sept. 30, but have yet to reschedule the contest.
