Women’s Tennis Blanked by Assumption, 9-0

RINDGE, N.H. (September 13, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated, 9-0, in Northeast-10 Conference play at home against Assumption on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3 (0-1 NE10), while Assumption opens its season at 1-0 (1-0 NE10).

Assumption opened play by taking all three doubles matches, while dropping just five games. Sophomores Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.) and Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) put together the strongest effort for Franklin Pierce, but they were defeated, 8-3, at second doubles, by Assumption junior Paige Benoit and freshman Valeria Sanchez.

The Greyhounds then ran off wins in all six singles matches as well. The most entertaining match of the day came at first singles, where sophomore Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) locked horns with Assumption senior Cassie Burbine, who was an All-NE10 Third Team selection a year ago. Burbine took the first set, 6-2, before Wyatt battled back with a 6-2 win of her own in the second set. Burbine then took the tiebreak set to come away with the 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 win.

In all, Assumption had five players tally victories in both singles and doubles play. Burbine led the way with wins at both first singles and first doubles. Before her duel with Wyatt in singles play, she teamed with freshman Julia Chappell for an 8-2 win at first doubles.

The Ravens return to the court on Thursday, Sept. 14, when they remain home to host Plymouth State in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. in Rindge.
