Melbourne, Gilooly Lead Way for Women’s Tennis in 6-3 Win at AIC

Ravens notch season's first win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 4, 2015) – Seniors Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.) and Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) each won in both singles and doubles play on Sunday afternoon, to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team in a 6-3 win on the road at American International in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-8 (1-7 Northeast-10), while American International falls to 1-9 (0-6 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce had a 3-0 lead before play even began on Sunday, as AIC was able to field just four players for the match. As a result, the Yellow Jackets had to default at third doubles, as well as fifth and sixth singles.

The two teams split the remaining doubles matches, which left the Ravens with a 4-1 lead heading into singles play. At first doubles, AIC senior Ana Paula Simoes and junior Eleanna Fulop combined for an 8-3 win over Franklin Pierce freshman Kara Brazel (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.). At second doubles, Gilooly and Melbourne scored an 8-0, shutout win over freshmen Whitney McKay and Callie Porcher.

Needing only one win in singles play to wrap up the match, Gilooly and Melbourne tacked on two more points for the Ravens to complete the victory. At third singles, Melbourne picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over McKay. Meanwhile, at fourth singles, Gilooly rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Porcher.

The Ravens return to the court on Monday, Oct. 5, when they return home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 2 p.m. in Rindge.
