Rodgers Leads Women’s Tennis to 6-3 Win Over American International

Gilooly adds singles win

Gilooly RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2014) – Senior Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) was victorious at both second doubles and third singles on Sunday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over American International in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-6 (1-6 Northeast-10), while AIC falls to 0-6 (0-6 Northeast-10).

The Ravens jumped to a 3-0 lead before play even started on Sunday, as AIC could only field a four-player team, which meant Franklin Pierce won by default at third doubles and both fifth and sixth singles. The teams split the day's remaining six matches.

Rodgers teamed with fellow senior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) at second doubles to squeak out an 8-6 win against AIC sophomore Eleanna Fulop and senior Jasmine Byrd. The AIC duo of sophomore Isabela Daudt and junior Ana Paula Simoes swept to an 8-0 win at first doubles.

In singles play, Simoes and Daudt earned straight-set victories at first and second singles, respectively, while junior Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win for the Ravens over Byrd at fourth singles. The tightest match of the day, though, was Rodgers' third singles tussle with Fulop. Rodgers rolled through the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second, 7-6, in a tiebreak (8-6). The third-set tiebreak went to the Franklin Pierce senior, 10-6, as Rodgers came away with the 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 10-6 win.

The Ravens return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m. in Easton, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Merrimack at 1 p.m.
