Ravens visit New Haven on Sunday

Rodgers Rodgers and the Ravens travel to New Haven on Sunday.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 19, 2012) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated, 9-0, at home by Bentley in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3 (0-3 Northeast-10), while Bentley opens the season at 1-0 (1-0 Northeast-10).

In doubles play, freshman Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and senior Melissa Cohen (Queens, N.Y.) provided the most resistance on behalf of the Ravens, as the duo squared off with Bentley seniors Rachael Litton and Paulina Sotomayor at first singles. Melbourne and Cohen stayed on serve through the first half of the match before Litton and Sotomayor took control on their way to an 8-4 victory.

Later, in singles play, freshman Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass.) proved a formidable opponent for Bentley freshman Olga Kosheva, as the two rookies slugged it out at fourth singles. The match went to a tiebreaker in the first set, where Kosheva prevailed, 7-4, to post a 7-6 win in the set. Unfortunately for the Ravens, Lovejoy would suffer an injury early in the second set that would hamper her the rest of the afternoon, as she ultimately fell, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Five different Bentley players were victorious in both singles and doubles play on Friday, led by freshman Ludmila Yamus, who dropped just five games on the day. At second doubles, she teamed up with fellow freshman Catherine Gianino for an 8-2 victory. Later, at first singles, Yamus posted a 6-0, 6-3 win.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they travel to New Haven for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 1 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.
