Melbourne, Rodgers Win Twice Each; Women's Tennis Falls to Saint Anselm, 6-3

Ravens Wednesday match moved to Milford, N.H.

Rodgers Rodgers had to rally from a rough first set, but picked up an important win at fourth singles on Tuesday against Saint Anselm.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 9, 2013) – Sophomore Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at fourth singles on Tuesday afternoon, a victory which tied the match at 3-3 at the time. However, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team dropped the remaining three matches still in play and suffered a 6-3 loss at home against Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-9 (1-9 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 3-7 (3-7 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce faced a 2-1 deficit coming out of doubles play. Rodgers and freshman Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) picked up the point for the Ravens with an 8-6 win over Saint Anselm freshman Kate Martin at second doubles. Junior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) and sophomore Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) had a rough go of it at first doubles, suffering an 8-1 setback to senior Alexandra Lawrence and junior Katherine Morrissey. The Ravens nearly picked up a second point in a third doubles match that needed extra time, but senior Melissa Cohen (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.) were clipped by senior Rachel Pedro and freshman Leah Fitzgerald, 9-7.

The two teams traded points at second and third singles, as Melbourne posted a strong, 6-4, 6-4 win over Morrissey at second singles, but Parrett dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to freshman Kathryn Rindo at third singles, leaving Saint Anselm with a 3-2 advantage. As Rodgers was shaking off a rough first set to win at fourth singles and tie the match at 3-3, McCarthy was locked in a battle at first singles.

McCarthy took the first set from Lawrence at first singles, 6-4, but then Lawrence answered with a 6-4 win of her own in the second. McCarthy ran out of steam in the third set however, and wound up with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss. Saint Anselm took all but one game combined between fifth and sixth singles to finish off the 6-3 win.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, April 10, in a Northeast-10 Conference match against American International. Originally scheduled to be played in Rindge, the match has been moved -- due to expected inclement weather -- to a 5:30 p.m. start at Hampshire Hills Sports and Fitness Club in Milford, N.H.
