Strong Doubles Play Not Enough as Women’s Tennis Falls to Le Moyne, 6-3

McCarthy lone Raven to win in both singles and doubles play

McCarthy McCarthy won at both first singles and first doubles for the second straight day on Saturday against Le Moyne.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 6, 2013) – Junior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) posted dominant wins in both first singles and first doubles on Saturday morning, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce. Junior Kristine Kenny led Le Moyne with a straight-set win at second singles after earning a victory at third doubles.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-7 (1-7 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne improves to 6-8 (5-6 Northeast-10).

McCarthy picked up wins in the top tier of both singles and doubles play for the second day in a row for the Ravens. She opened the day by teaming with sophomore Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) for an 8-4 win at first doubles over Le Moyne senior Rebecca Black and sophomore Margaret LaFleur. Later, McCarthy and Black met up in first singles play, with the former dropping only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

The Ravens led 2-1 after doubles play, as freshman Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and sophomore Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) got together for an 8-4 win at second doubles over sophomore Dominique Canale and freshman Allison Jones. Kenny and fellow Le Moyne junior Kelly Falconer got the Dolphins on the board at third doubles with an 8-3 triumph over senior Melissa Cohen (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.).

However, it was all Le Moyne in singles play, as the Dolphins took every match on the scoresheet after McCarthy's win at first singles. Kenny took the court at second singles and breezed past Melbourne, 6-1, 6-3. Parrett had the best chance to take a fourth point for Franklin Pierce, as she lost the first set to Canale at third singles, 6-2, before bouncing back to take the second, 6-4. Ultimately, Canale would take control of the third set, 6-3, to finish off the match.

Falconer also won in both singles and doubles play for Le Moyne, as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Boulanger at sixth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Monday, April 8, when they remain home to host Merrimack in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m.
