Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season, Falls to Merrimack, 7-1

First doubles team picks up win

Krolikowski Krolikowski teamed with McCarthy to pick up the win at first doubles on Wednesday afternoon.

RINDGE, N.H. (March 28, 2012) – Senior Kaitlin Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) teamed to post a 9-7 win in first doubles on Wednesday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated, 7-1, by Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-6 (1-5 Northeast-10), while Merrimack improves to 5-9 (4-1 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce picked up its only point of the afternoon right out of the gate, as Krolikowski and McCarthy gutted out the 9-7 win over Merrimack sophomore Kara Hole and freshman Shakee Messina at first doubles. Meanwhile, senior Nikki Chalifoux (Lebanon, Conn.) and junior Melissa Cohen (Queens, N.Y.) held their own at second doubles before ultimately falling, 8-4, to senior Courtney Garvey and sophomore Alyx Barnes.

For Merrimack, three different players captured victories in both singles and doubles play on the afternoon, while Messina and Hole bounced back from the doubles defeat to post dominant wins in first and second singles, respectively.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, April 1, when they travel to Le Moyne for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 11 a.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
