WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 9, 2011) – Both senior Kaitlin Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshman Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) were victorious in doubles and singles play on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision at New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-9 (1-9 Northeast-10), while New Haven improves to 3-9 (2-9 Northeast-10).

Krolikowski and McCarthy opened the match with an 8-5 win at first doubles over New Haven sophomore Gabby Fuentes and junior Christina Oiler. The remainder of doubles play would later prove to be a turning point in the match, as Franklin Pierce dropped very tight matches at second and third doubles by identical 9-8 (7-4) scores. At second doubles, junior Amanda Foley and freshman Daniela Roman clipped senior Lauren Smilovich (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Drew Alexander (Long Beach, N.Y.), while freshmen Nan Sirihorachai and Brianna Salamone squeaked past juniors Nikki Chalifoux (Lebanon, Conn.) and Amy Carpentier (Woonsocket, R.I.) at third doubles.

Franklin Pierce jumped to a 3-2 lead with wins at both first and second singles. In the top flight, Krolikowski powered past Fuentes, 6-2, 6-2. At second singles, McCarthy dropped the first set to Oiler, 6-3, but then stormed back with 6-0 and 6-3 wins to take the match. However, New Haven would pick up wins in three of the final four singles matches to post the 5-4 win. The final point for Franklin Pierce came at fourth singles, where Alexander posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Foley.

Roman, Sirihorachai and Salamone all posted wins in both doubles and singles play on the afternoon for New Haven. In addition to the dogfight at second doubles, Roman pulled out a close match over Smilovich at third singles. Roman took the first set, 6-2, before Smilovich answered with a 7-5 win in the second set, though Roman finished things off with a 6-4 third-set victory.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, April 10, when they travel to Merrimack for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 10 a.m. in North Andover, Mass.
