McCarthy posts wins at first singles, second doubles

RINDGE, N.H. (April 6, 2011) – Freshman Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) teamed with junior Kaitlin Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) to win at first doubles before picking up a win on her own at second singles on Wednesday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision at home to Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-8 (1-8 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 4-5 (4-5 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce opened things with an 8-4 win at first doubles, as Krolikowski and McCarthy joined forces to down Saint Anselm sophomore Alexandra Lawrence and freshman Katherine Morrissey. However, Saint Anselm would take both second and third doubles to hold the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Early in singles play, McCarthy breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Saint Anselm senior Erika Sartor. Meanwhile, Krolikowski stumbled in the first set before nearly pulling out the second, as she ultimately fell, 6-0, 7-5, at first singles. Junior Drew Alexander (Long Beach, N.Y.) picked up the remaining point on the day for Franklin Pierce with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Morrissey at fourth singles.

Two different Hawks picked up wins in both doubles and singles play for Saint Anselm on Wednesday. Senior Lauren DeGuglielmo teamed with Sartor at second doubles to pick up an 8-1 win, before DeGuglielmo posted a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at fifth singles. Meanwhile, junior Amanda Brahm picked up an 8-4 win at third doubles with sophomore Colleen Kluberdanz, as well as a 6-4, 6-4 win at third singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, April 9, when they travel to New Haven for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 1 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.
