Womens Tennis Falls To New Haven, 6-3
Alexander, Deronjic, Smilovich win in single for Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. (October 16,
2009) – The Franklin Pierce University women’s
tennis team was defeated, 6-3, by New Haven in Northeast-10
Conference play at Franklin Pierce on Friday evening. With the win,
New Haven improves to 2-5 (1-4 Northeast-10), while Franklin Pierce
falls to 0-5 (0-5 Northeast-10) with the loss.
The Ravens picked up points in second through fourth singles on the
evening. At third singles, junior Lauren Smilovich
(Meriden, Conn.) dropped the first set, 7-6 (7-5 in the
tiebreak), before winning both the second and third sets by 7-5
scores to grind out the victory. At fourth singles, sophomore
Drew Alexander (Long Beach, N.Y.) powered past her
opposition, 8-2. New Haven forfeited the match at second singles,
which gave sophomore Suzana Deronjic (Melrose,
Mass.) a victory.
The match swung on just a handful of points at the end of the
doubles matches. New Haven picked up slim, 8-6 victories in both
first and third doubles and added a 9-7 win in second doubles to
pick up all three doubles points. Both freshman Lauren Lyons and
junior Chelsea Annese were victorious in both doubles and singles
play on the evening for the Chargers.
The Ravens return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host
Adelphi in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m. in Rindge,
N.H.
