Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Anselm After Goal Late in the Second Half

MANCHESTER, N.H. (9/19/23) – The number 20th nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team dropped its second loss of the season Monday night in a 1-0 final against the Saint Anselm Hawks.

After the loss, the Ravens look ahead with a 1-2-2 (0-2-0, NE10) record. For the Hawks, the team is now 3-1-3 (2-0-0, NE10) on the season.

The first half between the two New Hampshire teams saw a its fair share of shots but neither the Ravens nor the Hawks could find the back of the net. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the score board read 0-0 but Saint Anselm outshot FPU 7-5.

The game remained scoreless all the way up to the 78th minute, when Saint Anselm's junior forward Josie Pecor stuck for the Hawks.

The ball was deep in the Hawks defensive zone, when St. A's senior midfielder Kathryn White cleared it out with a 40-yard kick towards the Raven's net. As the ball sailed, it became a footrace between Josie Pecor and two FPU backers, Pinja Eklund (Klaukkala, Finland) and Roos Monsma (Hoofddorp, Netherlands). As the three crossed into the box, junior goalie Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) pushed forward. Pecor felt the pressure closing in, and took a left footed chip shot that slipped by the diving Fox and rolled into the net giving the Hawks the 1-0 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the game.

The Ravens possessed the ball for the majority of the time in the remaining minutes, but quick reaction and pressure from the Hawks kept FPU from finding a game tying goal.

NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: Franklin Pierce University women's soccer have a week to reset as the team's next game is away at Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, September, 7 at 7PM.
