Women's Soccer Battles Hard in Season-Ending 1-0 Loss to #5 Saint Rose in NE-10 Championship Quarterfinals

Ravens hold Golden Knights 11 shots below season average

Katie Weldon started 17 of the 18 matches in goal this season.

ALBANY, N.Y. (November 5, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team’s 2013 season came to a tough end Tuesday afternoon as the Ravens fought valiantly, but came up just short in 1-0 loss to No. 5 nationally ranked Saint Rose in the Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinals at Sullivan Field in Albany, N.Y.

The Ravens, seeded eighth in the NE-10 championship, concluded the season with a 7-8-3 record, while the Golden Knights (No. 1 seed) improved to 17-0-2, and will play host fifth-seeded New Haven in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m.

Meeghan Arno scored the only goal of the match in the 25th minute when she finished off a feed from the right flank from Emily Benjamin, who was given an assist on the play. It was Arno’s second goal of the season.

The marker was the only shot on goal the Golden Knights had all day, as they attempted seven throughout the contest. It was a solid defensive effort by Franklin Pierce, as the Ravens held Saint Rose 11 shots below its season average.

Franklin Pierce managed just one shot, but it was on goal and attempted by sophomore forward Hannah Weagle (Ipswich, Mass.) in the first half. However, Saint Rose keeper Jessica Gerski deflected away the attempt to produce the shutout victory, and run her record to 17-0-2 on the year.

Franklin Pierce keeper Katie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) suffered the loss to cap her first full season as the starting goalie with a 7-8-2 mark.
