#11 Pace Rallies Late to Best Franklin Pierce on Senior Day

RINDGE, N.H.  (April 22, 2017) – Franklin Pierce University senior goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) stopped a season-high 16 shots as the no. 11 nationally-ranked Pace University Setters bested the Ravens 13-12 in a Senior Day Northeast-10 Conference contest Saturday afternoon on Sodexo Field. With the win, the Setters improve to 11-3, 9-2 in league play while the Ravens fall to 7-6, 5-6 NE10.

In a pregame ceremony the women's team honored their five seniors Kenady Kelly (Plymouth, N.H.), Colleen Leonardi (Granby, Conn.), Taylor Wilkinson (Wallingford, Conn.), Leana Richards (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Denise Hunt for their contributions to the university and its athletic department. Each senior earned the start on their special afternoon.

Hunt faced a barrage of shots in the game as the Setters rifled off 38 attempts, 29 that were on net. Hunt also scooped up one groundball in her collegiate regular season home finale. Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) racked up a game-best five goals to give her a league-leading 58 goals on the season. Sweeney moved into a tie for third place for the single season goals mark with Courtney Boardman (2005) and her 69 total points ranks as the third most during a single campaign in program history.

Twin sister Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) chipped in a 3-2-5 effort on 13 shots while winning four draw controls and causing one turnover. Classmate Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) tallied two markers in the game. For the Setters, Abby Haimson paced her squad's offensive attack with four goals and two helpers. Four other athletes racked up two goals apiece as well.

The Ravens capitalized on their free position attempts as they converted 5-of-7 (71.4%) compared to the guests 3-of-9 (33.3%) showing. However, Pace took care of the ball as they committed only three total turnovers as the Ravens turned the rock over 14 times.

Both teams traded goals over the opening 10 minutes as Pace leaped ahead 3-2 on Haimson's second unassisted score of the game. Briana Sweeney tied the score up by burying a free position shot. The score remained deadlocked for the next five minutes until Caitlin Sweeney gave the Ravens their first lead, 4-3 as she bounced home a shot from the left wing.

Pace jumped back in front a minute and thirty seconds later as Mary Kate Lonegan spun off a Raven defender and squeaked her attempt by Hunt. Angela Kelly threw a pass to a waiting Casey Gelderman on the wing to regain the lead to the guest side.

16 seconds after Gelderman's score, Briana Sweeney won a draw control and used her speed to streak through the teeth of the Setters defensive unit. When she was just outside the crease, Sweeney was whacked on her shot attempt but fisted the ball into the cage to knot the score up for the fifth time. Caitlin Sweeney moved her squad back ahead, but Makayla McDermott brought the score back to a deadlock at the 2:40 mark as the contest was tied six all at the end of the first.

The back and forth action picked up in the second stanza as the opponents matched each other's scores during the first four minutes. Two consecutive free position shots from Anna Wilbert and Briana Sweeney gave FPU a two goal, 10-8 advantage. Pace came within one, but Julia Miller (Westfield, Mass.) caught and shot a pass from Briana Sweeney who was standing in the back of the net to grow the Raven lead back to two.

Pace would outscore the Ravens 5-2 with three of the five scores coming off free position attempts over the remaining 20 minutes of play to leave Rindge victorious.

The Ravens will end their home schedule on Wednesday when they host no. 1 nationally-ranked Adelphi with game time slated for 4:30 p.m.
