No. 12 New Haven Pulls Away Late as Women’s Lacrosse Falls, 18-13

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 2, 2017) – Tied 12-12 with 10 minutes remaining, No. 12 nationally ranked New Haven poured in the next six goals over a span of 7:54 to send the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team home with an 18-13 loss on Sunday afternoon. Graduate student midfielder Kendal Cietek led all players with six goals, and added an assist as well, to lead the Chargers to the win in Northeast-10 Conference play at Kayo Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-4 (1-4 NE10), while New Haven improves to 7-0 (5-0 NE10).

After New haven took a 7-5 lead into halftime, the two teams combined to pile up 19 goals in the second half, as the game turned into a back-and-forth affair for much of the stanza. Franklin Pierce scored three of the first five goals of the half to close the gap to 9-8. Junior midfielder Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) led the way, scoring twice and dishing out an assist as the Ravens cut into the deficit.

The teams then alternated the next five goals, with New Haven pushing out to a 12-10 lead on a goal by junior attack Jessica Mazliah with 15:58 to play. Franklin Pierce answered with back-to-back goals, as Sweeney set up junior attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) followed with a free-position goal in a man-up situation to make it a 12-12 game with 10:38 to play.

The Chargers then went on the run which would put the game away. Cietek started the run with 9:54 to play, and senior attack Caitlin O'Brien finished it with a free-position goal with 2:00 to go, as New Haven took the 12-12 tie and turned it into an 18-12 lead. Mazliah set up a pair of goals for freshman attack Hailey Rattigan, while Cietek scored twice in the run.

Wilbert finished off a feed from Briana Sweeney -- who finished with seven points (3-4-7) -- with 1:42 to play to create the 18-13 final.

Behind Briana Sweeney for Franklin Pierce, Caitlin Sweeney finished with six points (4-2-6), while Wilbert and junior Julia Miller (Westfield, Mass.) tallied three goals each. Briana Sweeney led the team by collecting five draw controls.

Behind Cietek (6-1-7) for New Haven, O'Brien had five points (2-3-5), while sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Reh tallied four goals. Reh and junior defender Courtney Duffy collected three ground balls each, while Duffy led all players with three caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) finished with 13 saves against 31 shots on goal and suffered the loss (3-4) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Erica Rinsky played the opening 49:22 in goal for New Haven, made just four saves against 16 shots on her net and did not factor in the decision. Freshman Gianna Guerra (5-0) took over after the game got tied at 12-12. She allowed a goal on the only shot she faced, but picked up the win anyway.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, April 4, when they travel to Merrimack for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Martone-Mejail Field in North Andover, Mass.
