Women’s Lacrosse Overcome in Second Half, Defeated by No. 15 Stonehill, 14-7

RINDGE, N.H. (March 19, 2016) – It was Sweeneys run amok at Sodexo Field on Saturday afternoon, as sophomore midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) had four goals and an assist for the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team and senior attack Caitlin Sweeney -- no relation -- piled up five goals and two assists for No. 15 nationally ranked Stonehill. In the end, the latter's performance would win the day, as Stonehill took a 14-7 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-1 (0-1 Northeast-10), while Stonehill improves to 2-1 (1-0 Northeast-10).

The first half featured runs in both directions, en route to a 6-5 Stonehill lead at the halftime break. The Skyhawks scored the first three goals of the game, with sophomore midfielder Taylor Shannahan opening the scoring and Caitlin Sweeney providing a goal and an assist.

The Ravens responded with the next two goals and five of the next six to surge to a 5-4 lead. Their own Caitlin Sweeney had her team's first three goals, while sophomore attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) put away a feed from Sweeney to put Franklin Pierce out front with 62 seconds remaining in the half.

Stonehill had the final statement before the intermission however. With 20 seconds left in the first half, junior attack Shannon Booth buried a free-position shot. With just six seconds remaining, the Skyhawk Caitlin Sweeney finished off an assist from junior midfielder Elizabeth Vetter to make it a 6-5 Stonehill lead at halftime.

Franklin Pierce tied the game at 6-6 just 32 seconds into the second half, as senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) scored her only goal of the day off an assist from senior attack Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), which was the latter's only point of the game. Stonehill got goals from Caitlin Sweeney and sophomore midfielder Kelly Healey to take a two-goal lead with 24:47 to play, before Franklin Pierce got a Caitlin Sweeney goal of its own to cut the gap to 8-7 with 23:08 remaining.

It would be the final tally of the day for Franklin Pierce though, as Stonehill rattled off the game's final six goals to pull away for the 14-7 victory. Healey had two goals in the game's final run, while Caitlin Sweeney and senior attack Rebecca Matheson had a goal and an assist each.

For Franklin Pierce, Caitlin Sweeney led the way with five points on four goals and one assist, and she was the only Raven to score three or more points on the day. In fact, Beville (1-1-2) was the only other Ravens player to tally multiple points. Sophomore midfielder Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) and junior goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) collected three balls each, while Caitlin Sweeney corralled three draw controls.

For Stonehill, Caitlin Sweeney piled up a game-best seven points on five goals and two assists, while Matheson (1-3-4), Healey (3-0-3) and Vetter (1-2-3) all had at least three points as well. Junior attack Kiki Ryan nabbed four ground balls, Vetter snagged six draw controls and Caitlin Sweeney caused a pair of turnovers.

Hunt (3-1) made 10 saves against 24 shots on goal in a losing effort in the crease for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore netminder Kaitlyn Hess (2-1) also made 10 saves, against 17 shots on goal, to pick up the win in net for Stonehill.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, March 22, when they travel to Assumption for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
