Caitlin Sweeney Named to Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team

Twin puts together one of best freshman campaigns in program history

Sweeney Sweeney's season tied for second among freshmen in program history in points and ranked second in assists, en route to Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team honors.

RINDGE, N.H. (May 1, 2015) – Freshman midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) of the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team has named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team, as announced by the Conference office on Thursday.

Starting in 10 games, but playing in all 13 games, Sweeney led the Ravens in points (51). Of those 51 points, she had 36 goals and 15 assists. She also finished fifth on the team for ground balls, by collecting 20. Among Northeast-10 players, she is currently tied for 16th in the league in goals, tied for 15th in assists and ranks 15th in points.

More impressive, is where Sweeney's season ranked among freshmen in Franklin Pierce women's lacrosse history. She is just the third freshman to top 50 points in a Ravens uniform, matching Courtney Boardman's 51-point season of 2003. The only freshman to record more points in a season in program history was Lauren Stille '11, who also set the school record for points in a season with 87 in 2008. Meanwhile, Sweeney also ranks second among program freshmen in assists, with only current senior Madeline Shopshire having dished out more, with 16 in her freshman campaign of 2012.

Sweeney's point and assist totals are also significant overall in program history, as her 51 goals are tied for 11th among program single-season leaders, while her 15 assists are tied for sixth. If she were to duplicate her 2015 efforts in each of her three remaining seasons, Sweeney would finish with 204 points on 144 goals and 60 assists. Those totals would allow her to finish third in school history in points, fourth in goals and second in assists. Should she improve over the course of her career, her ceiling would become even higher. In all, Sweeney's freshman campaign has put her on pace to finish as one of the more dynamic scorers in school history.

Along the way this spring, Sweeney had a high of seven points against St. Thomas Aquinas on March 8, when she scored four goals and added three assists. Her season high for goals came on March 17, when she scored six times at Merrimack. In all, Sweeney tallied five or more points on seven occasions during the season.

As a team, the Ravens finished at 7-8, including a 5-8 mark in Northeast-10 play. The five wins were a new high-water mark in program annals for wins in conference play, while the seven overall victories matched the team record. Franklin Pierce finished just one game behind the final postseason berth in the Northeast-10.
