Ravens visit SNHU on Tuesday

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 19, 2014) – Junior attack Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) scored a pair of early goals as the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team took an early 3-2 lead on Saturday afternoon, but Bentley poured in the next 16 goals en route to a 20-5 win in Northeast-10 Conference play at Bentley University Turf Field. Freshman midfielder Ellie Shuman and senior attack Jackie Brown scored five goals each in the victory for Bentley.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-8 (3-7 Northeast-10), while Bentley improves to 7-7 (6-4 Northeast-10). Bentley piled up a 34-17 advantage in shot attempts in the game, including 24-8 in the first half.

Bentley opened the scoring on Saturday as Brown found the net 1:53 into the proceedings and sophomore midfielder Erin O'Connor followed with a goal on a free-position attempt 3:38 into the game to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Franklin Pierce scored three straight goals over a span of 5:23 to take its only lead of the afternoon. Shopshire scored twice in that span, including the go-ahead goal with 18:24 to play in the half, while junior midfielder Amanda Gauvin (Ashburnham, Mass.) had a pair of assists.

From there, it would be all Bentley, however, as the Falcons ran off 16 straight goals, including 10 consecutive over the final 17:57 of the first half and six more to start the second half. Bentley did not allow Franklin Pierce to find the net again until 5:13 remained in the second half, 43:11 after the Ravens' previous goal.

Shuman scored all five of her goals in the 16-goal run, including four over the remainder of the first half to help Bentley surge to a 12-3 halftime lead. The Falcons put away six free-position shots during the stretch on their way to an 8-for-12 day on free-position shots. Brown added her four remaining goals in the run, while senior attack Taylor Bastien dished out a pair of assists.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) and junior attack Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) each scored in the final six minutes for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore attack Caitlin White added a pair of goals for Bentley to complete her three-goal afternoon and create the 20-5 final.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) made eight saves against 28 shots on goal and took the loss (4-8) in front of the net for Franklin Pierce. Senior Ally Dorman stopped 10 of 15 shots to pick up the win (7-6) between the pipes for Bentley.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, April 22, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H. Franklin Pierce next plays at home in its season finale on Saturday, April 26 against Le Moyne at 1 p.m.
