Lamagdeleine scores pair

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 18, 2012) – Junior midfielder Courtney Weber (Centerport, N.Y.) scored four goals on Wednesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team was defeated, 17-7, by No. 13 nationally ranked Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play at Grappone Stadium. Freshman attacker Marissa Daly led all players with five goals in the win for Saint Anselm.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 5-7 (3-5 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 7-6 (5-4 Northeast-10).

Weber opened the scoring 2:21 into the game on a feed from freshman attacker Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.), but Daly responded for Saint Anselm just 22 seconds later. Daly would score the next three goals of the game to give Saint Anselm a lead it would never relinquish. The Hawks used the spurt as a springboard to an 11-2 run over a span 24:15 that allowed them to seize control of the game to the tune of an 11-3 lead with 3:02 to play in the first half. Daly chalked up all five of her goals in the first half, while junior attacker Britini Hickman and senior attacker Meghan Smith contributed two goals and an assist each.

For her part, Weber netted up all four of her goals in the first half as well. Franklin Pierce used a 3-1 spurt that spanned the halftime break and included a pair of goals by junior attacker Ashley Lamagdeleine (Westfield, Mass.) to pull within six goals at 12-6 with 24:23 to play. However, Saint Anselm put home the next four goals, including two more from Smith, to put the game out of reach.

Weber (4-0-4) and Lamagdeleine (2-0-2) were the only multiple-point scorers on the night for Franklin Pierce, while freshman attacker Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) found the back of the net as well. On the other side of the ball, Weber led all players with five groundballs, while Weber, senior defender Kim Jaksina (Townsend, Mass.) and junior midfielder Lindsey Leach (Hamden, Conn.) all caused three turnovers each to lead the team.

For Saint Anselm, Daly (5-0-5), Smith (4-1-5) and Hickman (3-2-5) all finished with five points each, while junior midfielder Lauren Alfis (1-2-3) and freshman attacker Kaitlyn Stazinski (0-3-3) notched three points each to round out the Hawks' multiple-point scorers. Defensively, freshman midfielder Sarah Doherty led the team with three groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Jillian Bolduc (Atkinson, N.H.) faced a barrage of 26 shots on goal in the Franklin Pierce net, and stopped nine of them while taking the loss (5-6). Sophomore Katherine Amato picked up the win (4-3) for Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm held a 38-19 advantage in shot attempts and a 17-8 edge in draw controls in the game, while Franklin Pierce posted a 24-17 advantage in ground balls. Franklin Pierce was successful on 11 of its 13 clear attempts (84.6%) and went 0-for-2 on free-position shots. Saint Anselm went 14-for-14 on clear attempts and 4-for-9 on free-position opportunities (44.4%).

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, April 21, when they return home to host Le Moyne in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge, and Franklin Pierce will honor its senior class prior to the start of the game.
