MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 25,
2008) – Eleven different Penwomen scored at least
one goal as Southern New Hampshire University defeated Franklin
Pierce University, 19-6, in the Ravens’ 2008 Northeast-10
Conference women’s lacrosse opener on Tuesday afternoon at
Larkin Field.
Sophomore Carole Lee (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led a very
balanced SNHU attack with a team-high three goals, while six other
teammates scored two goals each. Classmate Jami Shugrue (Lowell,
Mass./Lowell) added three assists to her two goals for a team-high
five points, while senior Nicole Downey (Rutland, Vt./Rutland)
recorded one goal and three assists for four points.
Freshman Lauren Stille (North Quincy, Mass./North
Quincy) was the only offensive option for Franklin Pierce
against the Penwomen, as she scored all six of the Raven goals on
the day. Senior captain Celine Stamets (Sausalito,
Calif./Mavin Catholic) and freshman Jillian Benn
(North Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) also recorded assists,
with Benn picking up her first collegiate point.
The Penwomen began strong by scoring the first three goals of the
game, as three different players scored in the first 5:32 of the
contest, but Stille responded with a pair of tallies in a 45-second
span to bring the Ravens back within a goal 6:38 in. However,
Southern New Hampshire scored the final seven goals of the first
half to take control headed into halftime, and the home
team’s lead never shrunk to fewer than eight over the final
30 minutes of play
Southern New Hampshire held a 28-17 advantage in shots on goal for
the afternoon. Freshman goaltender Chaniece Franklyn
(Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) made nine saves for the
Ravens, while junior Katie Clark (Norwich, Conn./St. Bernard)
turned away 11 shots for SNHU.
Franklin Pierce (1-2, 0-1 NE-10) completes its four-game road trip
to begin the season on Thursday night, as the Ravens travel to
Smithfield, R.I., to take on Bryant University at 7 p.m. Southern
New Hampshire (4-2, 4-0 NE-10) heads on the road for three games
beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. at Molloy College.
