Ravens’ Stille and Assumption’s Goldstein tie for game-high with seven goals each

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 26, 2008) – Assumption College attacker Jenna Goldstein (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored seven goals, including the game-winner with 3:15 left in regulation, as the Greyhounds held off Franklin Pierce University to earn a 20-18 victory in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Field.

Goldstein netted seven goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist for eight points to lead the Greyhounds. Junior Shannon Howard (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip) added three goals and two assists and freshman Becca Kelley (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) contributed three goals to help Assumption to the victory.

Freshman Lauren Stille (North Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) was the top scorer for Franklin Pierce with seven goals and one assist for eight points. With the 2008 conference slate complete after today’s contests, Stille easily captured the conference’s scoring title with 73 goals and 87 points in 16 matches, finishing 14 goals and 12 points ahead of the second-place finisher. Both totals, along with her team-best 14 assists, are new single-season records at Franklin Pierce.

Freshman Jordan Baillargeon (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) added four goals and an assist for the Ravens on the day, while junior captain Carla Savini (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and freshman Ashley Moirano (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also netted three goals each.

In the opening half, Assumption scored seven of the game’s first nine goals to open up a 7-2 lead 12:26 into the match. The Greyhound lead was five at 11-6 entering the final minute of the first half, but Franklin Pierce scored four times in the final minute to lower the deficit to one. Savini began the rally with exactly one minute left, and Stille scored twice in 12 seconds as time wound down to end the spurt.

Assumption got all four goals back in the first 3:41 of the second half to take a 15-10 lead with 26:19 left in the game, but the Ravens would not go quietly. Franklin Pierce slowly chipped away at the Assumption lead, eventually cutting the deficit to only one goal at 18-17 as Baillargeon scored her fourth of the game on a free-position shot with 3:38 left. Goldstein responded with her seventh of the day only 23 seconds later, however, and the Greyhounds held on for the win.

The two teams played a very even game, as Franklin Pierce held a slight 43-42 advantage in shots and both teams fired 35 shots on goal. Senior goaltender Michaela Sullivan (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) made 15 saves in her final game in a Raven uniform, while senior Lauren Matysiak (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) stopped 17 shots for Assumption.

Franklin Pierce completes its 2008 season with a 3-13 overall record and a 1-9 mark in the Northeast-10. The Ravens set no fewer than seven individual and team records during the season, including shattering the school record for goals in a season with 180. Assumption completes its campaign with a 2-14 overall record and a 2-8 conference mark.
