Women's Ice Hockey: Ravens Take Flight in Fairfield; 3-1 Win Over Sacred Heart in NEWHA Quarterfinals.

FAIRFIELD, CT (2/23/2024) -- In a rematch of last year's NEWHA Quarterfinals matchup between Franklin Pierce and Sacred Heart, the Ravens scored two goals in the third period to take game one in the best-of-three series, 3-1. 

Score: Franklin Pierce 3, Sacred Heart 1

Records: Franklin Pierce (16-15-1, 14-13-1 NEWHA), Sacred Heart (15-20-2, 14-12-2 NEWHA)

Location: Fairfield, C.T (Martire Family Arena)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Both teams scored a goal in the first period. With 6:54 remaining in the period, sophomore transfer forward Anna Caumo (Brunico, Italy) scored on the power play to give Franklin Pierce a 1-0 lead. 

• With under five minutes to play in the first period, senior forward Paige McNeil tied the game at one. 

• Heading into the third period, the game remained tied. With 8:06 to go, the Ravens had a two-on-one opportunity. Caumo found senior forward Claire Casey (Superior, Wis.) and she buried it past Sacred Heart sophomore goaltender Jillian Petruno to make it 2-1 Ravens. 

• Franklin Pierce senior forward Emilie Prive (Morrisville, VT) sealed game one as she scored the empty netter to make it 3-1. The Ravens have a 1-0 series lead over the Pioneers. 

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

• Sophomore goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, III) made 38 saves on 39 shots.

• Franklin Pierce was 1 for 5 on the power play. Sacred Heart was 0 for 1 on the power play.

• Sacred Heart outshot Franklin Pierce 39-25. 

• Franklin Pierce won 29 faceoffs.
