Women's Ice Hockey: Ravens Fall Short in The Final Seconds 3-2

Winchendon, Mass. (2/9/2024)-- The Franklin Pierce Women's Ice Hockey team was seconds away from overtime when the Skyhawks netted a late goal to secure a 3-2 win on the road.

Location: Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, Winchendon, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After a scoreless first period, Lauren Maras (Alexandria, Minn.) saucer passed the puck to the stick of Ella Dunn (Richmond, B.C.) who from a tough angle, put it top shelf over the Skyhawks goaltender giving the Ravens on the board and the lead 1-0 at the 4:34 mark. 

  • The Skyhawks would answer 5 minutes later on the power play when Josie Mendeszoon found the loose puck and put it past Raven goaltender Gwen Bowler (Canterbury, N.H.) tying the game 1-1. 

  • The Skyhawks would strike again two minutes later while shorthanded with Maddison Achtyl scoring on the breakaway giving the Skyhawks the lead 2-1.  

  • The Ravens would rally back three minutes later when Maras followed up her backhand shot and got the loose puck to her stick and flushed it in making it 2-2.  

  • Then in the third period in the dying seconds, a wrist shot from Maddison Achtyl was able to beat Bowler and secure the 3-2 win for the Skyhawks.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • Gwen Bowler made 38 saves on 41 shots. Eve Stone made 13 saves on 15 shots.  

  • Franklin Pierce was outshot by Stonehill 41-15 

  • The Ravens were 0 for 3 on the power play while the Skyhawks were 1 for 2. 

NEXT UP FOR THE RAVENS: 

  • The Ravens will go on the road to finish the weekend series against the Skyhawks, puck drop at 1 pm on Saturday.
