Women's Ice Hockey: Ravens Drop Season Opener in 3-1 Loss to LIU

WINCHENDON, M.A. (10/27/2023) – The Franklin Pierce women's hockey team suffered a defeat in their home opener to Long Island University (LIU), falling by a score of 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Jenna Ruiz (Webster, Wis.) gained the attacking zone on a two-on-one with Claire Casey (Superior, Wis.). Ruiz dished a pass to Casey who tucked it past Tindra Holm on a backhander to go up 1-0 5:50 into the first period.
  • The Sharks evened the score at one apiece at the 11:57 mark of the first period. Sarah Rourke scooped up a loose puck in the defensive zone and turned on the jets for a breakaway, sneaking it past Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) on the short side.
  • The score would remain 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
  • Sarah Rourke added her second goal of the night by sliding past a loose rebound in front of traffic to give the Sharks the 2-1 lead 5:02 into the second period.
  • Ryane Kearns iced the game with an empty net goal with 31 seconds remaining to give the Sharks the 3-1 road victory.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

  • Jill Hertl made 20 saves on 18 shots after playing 58:11. The 49 seconds off the ice came in the third period when she was pulled to add an extra skater for the Ravens.
  • Franklin Pierce outshot LIU 34-21.
  • Both teams came up short on power play opportunities; LIU:0 for 2, FPU: 0 for 3. 

NEXT FOR THE RAVENS:

  • The Ravens return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena to take on the Sharks at 3 p.m.
