Burlington, VT.- The Franklin Pierce University Ravens women's ice hockey opened conference play on the road against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights with a 1-0 win.

Claire Casey: gained an assist on Kawa's goal.

The Raven's ring up their first win of the season in the conference opener with a late third period goal by Alyssa Kawa (4). They improve to 1-2-0, 1-0-0 NEWHA. Jill Hertl backstopped the Raven's with a 26 save shutout performance.

Jill Hertl was on the ice for all but two seconds in the first win of the season for Franklin Pierce. Her impact was felt for all of the game as the Chicago native lead the team with a soaring 26 save shutout. This win is the first of the season for the Ravens, and represents their first conference win of the season. After being battle tested against St Thomas, Hertl was ready for the test. The Ravens defense was stout for Head Coach David Stockdale and played a big role in Hertl's seventh career shutout and third overall against the Purple Knights. Hertl's steadying presence was the key tonight for the Falcons.

Neither team found the net in 11 combined power play chances. The Ravens lead the night with six penalties killed. Another area that the Ravens excelled in to set up their possession game was at the faceoff dot. Stockdales group notched 35 wins on 57 attempts which keyed the Ravens up front.

Kawa's goal represents her first career game winner as a Raven, her second in her college career, and her fourth goal overall in three games this season.

The Women's team take on Saint Michael's again tomorrow afternoon (10/14) in Burlington at 3 pm.
