Women’s Ice Hockey Hangs Another Zero, Blanks Post, 3-0

Cassidy Jones

SHELTON, Conn. (November 20, 2021) -- It's now four straight shutouts, and seven on the season through 13 games, for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team. This time, it was 11 saves from sophomore Suzette Faucher (Middleton, Wis.) and a goal in each period for the Ravens, who finished off a weekend sweep of New England Women's Hockey Alliance opponent Post, with a 3-0 win at Sports Center of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-4-1 (5-1-0 NEWHA) and is unbeaten in its last seven (6-0-1). With the loss, Post falls to 2-11-0 (2-7-0 NEWHA). The two will wrap up the four-game NEWHA season series with a weekend set at Franklin Pierce in mid-February.

A day after securing her 100th career point, graduate student Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) was back at it on Saturday, as she opened the scoring at the 9:42 mark of the first period. Freshman Mikayla Kelley (Eagan, Minn.) had the initial shot on the play, from high in the right circle. Both Massaro and junior Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had hacks at the rebound at the top of the crease, with Massaro eventually brushing home her fifth goal of the season.

The Ravens doubled the lead to 2-0 late in the second period. From the left point, freshman Julia Stevens (Minneapolis, Minn.) slid the puck down the left wing for junior Katelyn Brightbill (Silver Spring, Md.), who sent it down below the goal line for sophomore Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.). Prive had a seam to walk out front and put away a backhand for her sixth of the season, and third goal of the weekend series, at 17:37. Prive has now tallied 5-2-7 over the last three games.

Franklin Pierce capped the afternoon with an insurance marker at 7:29 of the third. The defensive pair of sophomore Brooke Remington (Scandia, Minn.) and senior Kiki Doucette (Bridgewater, Mass.) combined to send junior Cassidy Jones (Stillwater, Minn.) into the offensive zone with a head of steam on the left side. Jones buried her third of the campaign from the top of the left circle on the rush.

Faucher (5-1-1) needed to make just 11 saves to chalk up her third shutout of the season, as well as her second in as many Saturdays. Senior Kaitlyn Daly (0-7-0) piled up 51 saves, against 54 shots, but was stuck with the loss anyway for Post.

The Ravens have the holiday weekend off, but will travel to Long Island for an important pair of NEWHA games to open the month of December, on Dec. 3-4. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
