MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (December 1, 2017) – The only goals of the game bookended the second period on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team and Morrisville State skated to a 1-1 tie at Morrisville State IcePlex. Each team settled for just the one goal after coming up empty on six power-play chances apiece, while Franklin Pierce posted a 30-27 shots advantage in the statistically-even game.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce now stands at 4-6-1, while Morrisville State moves to 7-3-2. The two teams will meet again on Saturday to wrap up the weekend series. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at the IcePlex.

The only offensive output of the night came in the middle frame on Friday. First, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring at the 3:34 mark, after forcing a turnover deep in the attack zone. Freshman forward Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) picked off a clearing attempt in the left-wing circle, turned and slipped a centering pass to freshman forward Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) in the slot. Massaro made a move to her backhand and roofed the puck out of the reach of Morrisville State freshman goaltender Karoline Årvik for her second goal of the season. It marked the second goal in as many games for Massaro, who tallied her first career goal in overtime at Castleton last week.

Morrisville had the answer at 15:40, just nine seconds after it finished killing off an abbreviated Franklin Pierce power-play chance. Junior defenseman Ciara Lark corralled a rebound in front of her own goal and fired a pass into the neutral zone, where she hit freshman forward Alexziz Giannamore in stride after the latter had just left the penalty box. The feed sprang Giannamore in on a breakaway, angling in slightly from the right-sing side. Giannamore deked once, moved to her backhand and flipped the puck past Franklin Pierce freshman goaltender Kelly Turney (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) for what would stand as the game-tying goal. Freshman forward Shanley Austin was credited with an assist as well, on Giannamore's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Each team took one penalty over the remainder of the second period, but neither would capitalize on its power-play chance. Morrisville then came away with nothing from a pair of third-period power plays. The Ravens earned a truncated, 40-second power play to close the overtime period, but came up empty as well, as the two sides skated away with the 1-1 tie.

Turney (1-3-1) finished with 26 saves against 27 shots in the crease for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, it was a 29-save outing, against 30 shots, for Årvik (7-3-2).
