Women’s Ice Hockey Stifled by Saint Anselm, 3-1

Doucette scores for Ravens

O'Neil WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 30, 2015) – Saint Anselm sophomore forward Alison Butler scored twice on Friday evening, including the game's first goal, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Saint Anselm in ECAC East play at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The defeat was the first on home ice for Franklin Pierce since Feb. 16, 2013, and snapped its home-ice unbeaten streak at 21 games (20-0-1).

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 14-3-1 (8-2-0 ECAC East), while Saint Anselm improves to 12-4-2 (8-1-2 ECAC East). In addition to stopping Franklin Pierce's home-ice unbeaten streak, the loss snapped the team's program-record winning streak at seven games.

Butler opened the scoring early in the second period after a scoreless first stanza on Friday evening. Sophomore forward Alex Starzyk had the puck in the right-wing corner and centered to Butler in the slot. Butler quickly picked the top-left corner with her shot to score her seventh goal of the campaign at the 1:49 mark. Sophomore forward Alison Quinn picked up an assist on the play as well.

The game would remain 1-0 until near the midpoint of the third period, when senior forward Tiffany Herron struck for the eventual game-winning goal at the 9:52 mark. With a Saint Anselm power play winding down, the puck came to senior defenseman Franny Nicholson at the middle of the blue line. She sent a pass to the top of the left circle for Herron, who snapped her 10th goal of the season to the back of the net from there.

Less than four minutes later, at 13:39, Butler put home her second of the night. Senior forward Sabrina Iannetti led the rush into the offensive end down the right-wing side. Inside the right circle, Iannetti dropped a pass for Butler, who again went top-shelf, this time picking the top-right corner to push the lead to 3-0 and notch her second multiple-goal game of the season.

Franklin Pierce's only goal came on a 5-on-3 advantage with 15 seconds to play in regulation. Amid a scramble in front of the cage, junior forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) was able to jam home her seventh goal of the year, off an assist from sophomore forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska).

Sophomore goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) made 30 saves against 33 shots and suffered the loss (5-3-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. Senior Lindsey Brown finished with 20 saves against 21 shots to pick up the win (9-0-1) between the pipes for Saint Anselm.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they remain home to host Salve Regina in an ECAC East contest. Opening faceoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
