Early Arnold Goal Stands Up as Women’s Ice Hockey Blanks Nichols, 1-0

Quick turnaround ahead as Ravens head for Plymouth State Saturday

Arnold Arnold's second goal of the season was her first career game-winning goal on Friday night against Nichols.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 10, 2014) – Sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) scored the game's only goal, just 106 seconds in on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team posted a 1-0 win over Nichols at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Freshman goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) stopped all 18 shots she saw to pick up the shutout in net.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 11-2-0, while Nichols falls to 3-9-0 (2-4-0 ECAC East). Franklin Pierce chalked up a 31-18 advantage in shots in the game. For the Ravens, it was the second 1-0 victory of the season, as well as their third shutout of the campaign.

The Ravens came up with the game's only goal, just 1:46 into the proceedings. Senior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) and sophomore defenseman Samantha Bureau (Ottawa, Ontario) worked the puck to Arnold, who had found some space near the left point. She fired from there, and the shot found its way to the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The remaining 58:14 would go without another goal, as Franklin Pierce came away with the 1-0 victory. The Ravens came up empty on three power-play chances, as they looked to extend the lead along the way, but they were able to kill off four penalties as well. With Nichols attempting to even the score, sophomore forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) took a late penalty, with 4:53 to play in the third, prompting a Nichols timeout in an attempt to draw up a goal. After Franklin Pierce was able to kill the hooking minor, the Bison got the goaltender to the bench for an extra attacker over the final 31 seconds, but came up empty there as well.

White made 18 saves to pick up the win (6-2-0) and post her second shutout of the season, as well as the fifth whitewashing in program history. At the other end of the ice, junior Tori Gianformaggio came up with 30 saves, but suffered the loss (2-4-0) between the pipes for Nichols.

It's a quick turnaround for the Ravens, who return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Plymouth State. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Hanaway Rink in Plymouth, N.H.
